Background of Adivasi Ashram School Chikhale Village

In 1979, the Institute of Cultural Affairs: India (ICA: India) began a rural development project in Chikhale Village. Chikhale is located east of Mumbai, beyond major urban development. The village is surrounded by the Sahyadri Mountain range, part of India’s western ghats. ICA: India is a non-profit organization registered under the Society Act of 1954. It is recognized by the Government of India as an 80 G. organization for tax exempt purposes. The Chikhale Ashram opened its doors to one class of 15 1st Standard students in 1989. Each succeeding year, another grade was added as the first students progressed. In 1999, the government authorized the school to expand up to 10th Standard. In 2010, the school got permission to offer junior college classes in both arts and science.

Both national and religious holidays are celebrated by the students and faculty.

Daily meals and snacks are prepared in anmodern up-to-date kitchen. Meals are served in the school’s assembly hall.

The school also provides full housing facilities, school supplies and medical care as needed. Round-the-clock supervision is provided during the students’ stay at the school. Daily attendance of faculty and students is automatically recorded on bio-metric system.
